Her sculptures and installations often use familiar objects in a way that creates a jarring and uncanny effect. In this respect, she has been likened to Marcel Duchamp. Fritsch’s work is inspired by subjects including Christianity, art history and folklore. Noted works include Rattenkönig (Rat King), a giant circle of black polyester rats, included in the Venice Biennale in 1999, and Hahn (Cock), a 4.7 metre high bright blue cockerel displayed on London’s Trafalgar Square Fourth Plinth from July 2013 to January 2015.
