Sworders Modern British & 20th Century Art 20 April 2021

Gallery owner Sally Hunter came to Badgemore Grange - a Victorian home sited in a little over nine acres of land on the outskirts of Henley on Thames - in 1990 when she and owner Ian Posgate (1932- 2017), an insurance underwriter at Lloyds of London, were married. Sally Hunter had run a gallery in St Ives in the early 70s, later taking over a gallery on Motcomb Street in Knightsbridge where she chose to specialise in Modern British art. “We bought the best examples of their type, but then artworks were affordable - £1,500 was considered a lot of money to pay for a painting” she recalls. Furnishing Badgemore was a joy. “With a gallery in Knightsbridge, the business of arranging, hanging, and moving were part of my stock in trade - it was just that the area to be filled at Badgemore was so much bigger.” From Margaret Thomas to Joan Warburton and Lucy Harwood, many of the pictures and artists are associated with East Anglia - a reflection perhaps of Sally’s early life in Suffolk (she was brought up in Woodbridge). Sworders are pleased to offer the entire contents of Badgemore Grange. The sale will be comprised of 450 lots of pictures, furniture and works of art which capture the style and taste of the owners. “It is a collection which we hugely enjoyed putting together and living with for many years.” S a l l y H u n t e r & I a n Po s g a t e T H E C O L L E C T I O N The Sally Hunter & Ian Posgate Collection, Badgemore Grange auction will take place on Tuesday 18 May, for more information about the sale please contact Jane Oakley janeoakley@sworder.co.uk | 01279 817778
